Configuring Your Email Client to Check a Mailbox:
You can configure an email program such as Outlook Express to check a new
mailbox's email account. In order to do so, you will need to provide some
basic settings:
- Name: Type the name, as you want it to appear next to
your email address.
- Email address: Type the full email address.
- Incoming mail server: Choose POP 3, then type mail.yourdomain.com
(where yourdomain.com is the part of your email addresses after the @ symbol.
- Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: This will be the outgoing
mail server of your ISP. (EX smtp.earthlink.net, smtp.bellsouth.net). Ask
your local network administrator for an outgoing mail server you can use
on your LAN.
- Account name: Type the full email address
- Password: Type the email password (this is case-sensitive).
- Connections: If connecting to the Internet using a dial-up
modem, select Connect using my phone line. If you are connecting to a mail
server via your office network (LAN), select Connect using my local area
network (LAN). DSL and cable modem connections are often over Ethernet and
mimic a LAN connection.
CONFIGURING POPULAR EMAIL PROGRAMS
The following will help you configure an email program to check email for
a mailbox you've created in the Control Center.
If your email program is not listed below, refer to the instructions that
came with the program to learn how to configure it. Use the configuration
instructions provided at Configuring Your Email Client to Check A Mailbox
above.
As you type your password, be sure to check the CAPS LOCK key as the password
is case-sensitive.
To configure Netscape Communicator/Navigator for Windows:
- Launch Netscape Communicator (or Navigator).
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the plus sign ( +) next to Mail and Groups.
- Select Identity under Mail and Groups.
- In the Preferences, under Your Name, type your full name as you would
like it to appear on your email messages.
- Under Your Email, type the full email address. For example, username@yourdomain.com
.
- Under Return Address, if you want your recipients' replies to go to another
email address, type it here. If you don't enter anything here, replies will
go to your email address.
- Under Organization, type in the name of your business or group, if there
is one. This will be placed on all messages you send to newsgroups.
- Select Mail Server under Mail and Groups.
- Under Preferences, next to Mail server user name, enter the email address
for your mailbox
- Next to Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server, type the outgoing mailserver of your
ISP. (EX smtp.earthlink.net or smtp.bellsouth.net. Ask your local network
administrator for an outgoing mail server you can use on your LAN.)
- Next to Incoming Mail Server, type mail.yourdomain.com (where yourcdomain.com
is the part of your email addresses after the @ symbol)
- Next to Mail Server type, click the button next to POP3.
- Click OK to save your changes.
To configure Netscape 6 for Windows:
- Open Netscape 6.
- From the Tasks menu, choose Mail.
- From the Edit menu, choose Mail/News Account Settings.
- Click the New Account button.
- Select ISP or email provider.
- Click the Next button.
- In the Your Name field, type your name.
- In the Email Address field, type the full email address for your mailbox.
For example, username@yourdomain.com .
- Click the Next button.
- Click the arrow box on the Server Type pop-up list and choose POP Mail
Server.
- In the Server Name field, type mail.yourdomain.com
- Click the Next button.
- In the User Name field, enter the email address for your mailbox
- Click the Next button.
- In the Account Name field, type the email address for your mailbox.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
- Select Outgoing (SMTP) Server in the list.
- In the Server Name field, type the outgoing mailserver of your ISP. (EX
smtp.earthlink.net or smtp.bellsouth.net. Ask your local network administrator
for an outgoing mail server you can use on your LAN.)
- Click the OK button.
To configure IE/Outlook Express for Windows:
- Launch Outlook Express, Internet Explorer's default email program.
- Click the Tools menu and select Accounts.
- Click the Mail tab to bring it to the front. This displays a window containing
your Internet accounts.
- To modify your existing account to check mail at your new mailbox, click
its name and click the Properties button. Or, to add your mailbox account,
click New and choose Mail from the pop-up window.
- To rename an old account or set up a new one, type a name for it in the
Mail Account field. (Changing your account name does not affect your mailbox
username.)
- Enter the following in the User Information area:
- Next to Name, type your full name as you would like it to appear on your
email messages.
- Next to Organization, type in the name of your business or group, if there
is one. This will be placed on all messages you send to newsgroups.
- Next to E-Mail Address, type the full email address for your mailbox.
For example, username@yourdomain.com .
- Next to Reply Address, if you want your recipients' replies to go to another
email address, type it here. If you don't enter anything here, replies will
go to your email address.
- Click the Servers tab.
- Next to Outgoing Mail (SMTP), type the outgoing mailserver of your ISP.
(EX smtp.earthlink.net or smtp.bellsouth.net. Ask your local network administrator
for an outgoing mail server you can use on your LAN.)
- Next to Incoming Mail (POP3), type mail.yourdomain.com (where yourdomain.com
is the part of your email addresses after the @ symbol)
- Next to My Incoming Mail Server, select POP3.
- If you are the only person who uses this computer to access the Internet,
click Log on using to store your username and password in Outlook. In Account
name, enter the email address for your mailbox, and enter your password
in Password.
- Click OK to close the Properties window.
- Click Close to close the Accounts window and save your changes.
To configure Outlook Express for Macintosh:
- Launch Outlook Express.
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click E-Mail on the right side of the window.
- To modify your existing account, follow the directions below. If you want
to add a second account to your computer, click New Account. On the window
that appears, type a name for the account, choose POP, and click OK.
- Next to Full Name, type your name as you would like it to appear on your
email messages.
- Next to E-Mail Address, type the full email address for your mailbox.
For example, username@yourdomain.com .
- Next to Organization, type in the name of your business or group, if there
is one. This will be placed on all messages you send to newsgroups.
- Next to SMTP Server, type the outgoing mailserver of your ISP. (EX smtp.earthlink.net
or smtp.bellsouth.net. Ask your local network administrator for an outgoing
mail server you can use on your LAN.)
- Next to Account ID, enter the email address for your mailbox
- Next to POP3 Server, type mail.yourdomain.com
- If you want to rename this account (for example, if you want to change
its name to Work or Home), type the new name in the Account name box.
- Click OK to save your changes.
To configure Netscape 6 for Macintosh:
- Open Netscape 6.
- From the Tasks menu, choose Mail.
- From the Edit menu, choose Mail/News Account Settings.
- Click the New button.
- Select ISP or email provider.
- Click the Next button.
- In the Your Name field, type your name.
- In the Email Address field, type the full email address for your mailbox.
For example, username@yourcompany.com .
- Click the Next button.
- Click the arrow box on the Server Type pop-up list and choose POP Mail
Server.
- In the Server Name field, type pop.yourcompany.com
- Click the Next button.
- In the User Name field, enter the email address for your mailbox
- Click the Next button.
- In the Account Name field, type the email address for your mailbox.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
- Select Outgoing (SMTP) Server in the list.
- In the Server Name field, type the outgoing mailserver of your ISP. (EX
smtp.earthlink.net or smtp.bellsouth.net. Ask your local network administrator
for an outgoing mail server you can use on your LAN.)
- Click the OK button.
