MINI-CAMP

 

            Mandatory mini-camp is help for four evenings starting 3 days before the regular band camp.  Attendance at mini-cmp is required to be a member of the marching band.  It is here that techniques are taught for the upcoming marching season.  You will become acquainted witht the proper manner of glide-stepping, low marching, vocal commands, and many other fundamentals that will be used during the course of the season.  It is also a week to start getting your body in good physical condition so that less injuries and fatigue occur at band camp. 

 

BAND CAMP

           

            Another one of the long standing traditions of the JDJ Band is band camp.  Each August, the entire band membership, along with staff and adequate chaperones, go to camp for six days.  The importance of this week to the success of the band is immeasurable.  In order to participate in marching band, attendance at band camp is mandatory.  It is at band camp that the fundamentals of marching learned at mini-camp are reiterated, and the particulars of this year’s competition show are taught and polished.  Most importantly, the feelings of fellowship and spirit are instilled in the band membership that will carry us to the end of the season and ultimately last a lifetime.

 

Some of the basic information regarding band camp is as follows:

 

1. The medical forms, contracts, etc. that must be signed by your parents must be turned in before leaving for camp.

2. Transportation to band camp is on school buses. Transportation will be provided for the return trip if needed

3. Students will be housed in dorms, separated by sex and grade level.

4. Band camp will be chaperoned by parents of JDJ Band members on a volunteer basis. Each floor will have 3or 4 chaperones, and these chaperones will serve as those student’s “mom” or “dad” for the week. They are to be listened to and respected.

5. Camp is held at a college campus with the facility consisting of the lodge/cafeteria, cabins, marching fields, indoor rehearsal/meeting area, and swimming pool.

6. There will be one chaperone with us the entire week that is trained in First Aid techniques or a nurse, and the hospital is nearby.

7. The students are urged to write home and will be able to receive letters. Phone calls will be for emergencies only!

8. Students will be served three cafeteria-style meals during the day, and snacks will be available in the afternoon and evening.

9. There will be swimming and other recreation available during the student’s rest and relaxation time in the afternoon.

10. Each evening after marching rehearsal, there will be a planned activity for the students to attend.

11. There will be no rookie initiation. Initiations are against state law.

12. On the last evening of band camp, the parents and friends of the JDJ Band members are invited to visit camp. We will present techniques we have learned and you will be permitted to leave with your parents provided we are given your parents written approval.

13. You will want to bring plenty of casual clothes (shorts, T-shirts, etc.),

COMFORTABLE tennis shoes, and any needed toiletries. *See list below.

14. The following materials are provided as a check list to help you remember what items to bring with you to camp and what should be left at home.

 

*What to Bring to Band Camp:

Casual clothing for one week (plenty of socks and underwear)

Two pairs of comfortable shoes (tennis shoes preferred)

Waterproof boots or overshoes

Warm jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt

Bedding: Sheet, pillow, 2 or 3 blankets or a sleeping bag.

(All bedding must be in a compact roll and clearly tagged)

Personal toiletries: i.e. toothbrush, paste, soap, deodorant, towels, shampoo, hair and

shaving needs.

Sleeping wear

Raincoat or poncho - we march rain or shine!

Suntan lotion

Flashlight

Hat for sun protection

Limit luggage to one large suitcase or footlocker and one overnight case or shoulder bag.

Insect Repellent

 

You may also want:

Swimsuit and towel

Camera, film and flash

Books or magazines

Sunglasses

Alarm Clock

Stationery, stamps, pen

 

ABOVE ALL DON’T FORGET:

Instrument (bring your lyre)

Valve or slide oil or cork grease

Reeds (AT LEAST FOUR)

Pencils

Extra sticks (percussion)

Paper clips, tape, or clothes pins for music

What NOT to bring!!!

Drugs (unless prescribed by a doctor with the proper paperwork or ok’d by the

director) - these are to be dispensed by our band camp nurse
